Whitby Underground provides counselling, support and guidance for young people aged 13 to 25 in Whitby. The service has continued to grow thanks to the partnerships with Whitby Community College, NYCC Extended Schools and other organisations and is now being extended to Eskdale and Caedmon Middle Schools. In the year to March 2010, 83 young people were supported and this is expected to grow in 2010/11.
Maria Keys, Counsellor, says "The service is recognised as a vital lifeline for young people and gives them the chance to talk about the issues affecting them within a safe, secure and confidential environment. It makes a positive contribution to their education, attendance and behaviour and they are more able to cope with difficult issues such as stress, bullying, eating disorders, family breakdown, self harming and bereavement." "I have attended sessions…..and it has changed my life dramatically for the best" (Young Person). "All the students…..were positive about the experience and it has proved to be an invaluable service for students who have issues which cannot be effectively addressed within the classroom or College resources. The extensive waiting list continues to corroborate this" (Teacher at Whitby Community College). "It continues to be a vital resource in helping vulnerable young people" (Youth Worker) Information, support, advice, etc. in Whitby and the northern part of the Borough contact:
