Coasters Café

Coasters Café was opened in 2008 and is a community café located on Westway in Eastfield. Open to the public five days per week, Coasters offers a broad menu of healthy meals, snacks and home-baking. We buy our supplies from local and fair-trade sources with the aim of providing reasonably priced, quality products. This year we have successfully made the transition from start-up funding to becoming a viable social enterprise.

The local police, parish council and neighbourhood partnership have used the venue to engage with local people. This year we have played host to community safety meetings, consultations and family activities, as well as our own Presentation Evening.

Coasters Vocational Training has grown steadily through 2009/10. Since September 18 students have attended and 13 students completed our programme, which is delivered in partnership with Yorkshire Cost College.

All the students leaving Coasters this year have been offered places on college courses. The programme includes: Food Preparation and Cooking – NVQ level 1; Work skills certificate; Health & Safety Certificates and Food Safety Certificates. This has been a very positive year for building partnerships with schools, funders and the private sector. The Criminal Justice Board awarded Coasters £2,500 for training resources through their Community Cash Back Award.

During 2009-10 Coasters offered training opportunities to students of the following schools: George Pindar Community Sports College; Graham School; Scarborough Pupil Referral Unit; Filey School; Raincliffe School; St. Augustine's RC School.
